Tennis has a long and illustrious history. The game, as it is known by us today, actually came into being in France. The origins of the game can be traced to a twelfth– thirteenth -century French handball game called ‘Jeu de paumme’, or ‘the game of the palm’. It said to be a highly fashionable sport played by the kings and the aristocracy, in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. The game was played mostly on the lawns and this was the main reason why it is called Lawn Tennis or Tennis on a lawn.

Tennis today has become a highly competitive, world-class sport which captivates thousands of players as well as fans all over the worldwide. There is a continuous program of tournaments and events that take place all through the year and top tennis stars have become the game’s icons for the new generation. A game that used to be the pastime of royalty has turned into a sport enjoyed by all today.

The top tournaments in Tennis are called Grand slams - Wimbledon Championships, the US Open Tennis Championship and The French Open. India has produced a few tennis players who have achieved international recognition - Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati and Sania Mirza.

How to Play Lawn Tennis

The game of tennis played between two players or pair of players on a rectangular court with fixed boundaries separated with a net. The purpose is to hit the ball over the net landing the ball within the margins of the court and in a way that results in the opponent being unable to return the ball. You win a point every time when opponent is unable to return the ball within the court.
